Building Experience in Sangkhlaburi, Thailand

Building Experience in Thailand – We need you!

There’s an old saying about travel that goes ‘take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints’ but what if you could leave something more? Something useful, valued and long-lasting?

Our building volunteering abroad projects in Thailand are a great way to discover the best of rural Thailand while contributing to the development of a small community.

You will help the communities of Sangkhlaburi by building, renovating and providing clean sources of water. The building volunteering work is diverse and no two days are ever the same. Your work might include digging foundations, installing water pipes, clearing land, erecting walls, painting, decorating or creating gardens & play areas.

Check prices, availability and book your place:

º Project closed 13 Apr-17 Apr during Songkran Festival.ª Project closed during New Year.

What Will I Do?

Volunteers who love hands-on work and physical labour are best suited to our building project. Previous volunteers on that have worked on this project have helped the community through various jobs, such as –

  • Building & installing water tanks ŸŸ
  • Improving the appearance of school classrooms ŸŸ
  • Creating & maintaining vegetable gardens
  • Installing toilets and plumbing
  • Creating roads and pathways
  • Building check dams ŸŸto prevent flooding
  • Repairing & helping to maintain the homes of elderly people in the community
  • Building new homes, schools and children centres

Building volunteering abroad, is it for me?

Our volunteer building abroad projects are open to all skill levels, even if you have no previous experience. You will be joined by our friendly guides who will help you along the way and you may also work alongside some local workmen.

Each and every job plays an important role in improving the community so whether you are helping to construct a roof, or are painting colourful cartoons on the side of a school, there will be a worthwhile job suitable for you. The volunteer work can be as challenging as you are comfortable with; so if you would like to do some serious manual work, or you would prefer something less demanding, your help as a building volunteer abroad will make all the difference.

The communities we support value the hard work of our building volunteers and really appreciate the high level of commitment to helping the community grow or maintain their way of life. It’s not uncommon for our volunteers to love the project so much that they often return or extend their stay.

We are incredibly proud of all the amazing things that our volunteer building abroad projects have already achieved, things like; working with engineers to bring clean water to a village, constructing huts to house disadvantaged families, and building a new children’s centre to provide a safe place for disadvantaged children to receive an education. With your help we can really help to make difference for the communities here.

Itinerary

DAY 1 – ARRIVE IN BANGKOK

Fly in to Bangkok and one of our friendly guides will be waiting at the airport to pick you and your fellow volunteers up. Once everyone has arrived your guide will take you to your guest house on the famous Khao San Road.

Drop off your things and then head out to explore the area to get your first proper taste of Bangkok. Later that evening you will meet up with the rest of your group for dinner and get to know each other better.

DAY 2 – BANGKOK TOUR

On day two you get to experience our Bangkok Tour. You will be taken to see some of the city’s most famous landmarks, such as Wat Arun (the Temple of Dawn), the huge Reclining Buddha, the Grand Palace, a ride on a long boat, a floating market and more!

DAY 3 – TRANSFER TO SANGKHLABURI, WELCOME MEETING AND ORIENTATION

Take a bus ride to the multi-cultural town of Sangkhlaburi which will be your new home for the duration of your volunteer time. When you arrive you will be given your orientation by our project coordinators so that you know what to expect and what you will be working on. The volunteer projects change each week depending on the needs of the project and the community – and you will be told how you will be doing your part to help make a difference. You will also be given any training that you might need so that you are fully prepared for the work ahead.

DAY 4-7 – VOLUNTEER PROJECT

It’s time to do your part on the volunteer building project. You will work as a team to help build and renovate community buildings and facilities. Be ready to get your hands dirty and get involved in whatever work is needed for the day. The work is varied and sometimes challenging but you will never be asked to do something that you can’t do.

The building volunteer work typically begins at 8am each day and ends around mid-afternoon, leaving you plenty of time to relax, explore the local area and discover Thailand.

If adventure is your kind of thing you will be pleased to know that Sangkhlaburi is also known for it’s many outdoor activities. With plenty to choose from you could find yourself on a trek through the jungle, or even getting involved in a variety of water sports.

FREE WEEKENDS IN SANGKHLABURI

At the weekends you are given time to relax during your time off and are encouraged to explore Sangkhlaburi, which offers many outdoor activities such as jungle treks and water sports.

CONTINUE VOLUNTEERING OR ONWARD TRAVEL

If you are doing one of our one week projects then it will now be time to leave the project and travel home. You’re bag might be heavier with all of the things you bought at the local markets but your heart will be lighter safe in the fact that you did your part to help improve a small community. “I recently spent 6 weeks working with Starfish on their School Development project. I had always wanted to help with a construction project in a developing country and this seemed to be the perfect fit for me. From the first time I contacted Starfish I was really impressed with their level of customer service, guidance, knowledge of Thailand, the projects and the reasons why they operate. They seemed to be very professional but I was mostly impressed by their insistence of meeting the expectations of the volunteers requirements before the financial aspect – as so many other ‘volunteer’ organisations fail to do!

From the moment I arrived in Bangkok… I felt safe, secure and well cared for by everybody involved. I made a huge number of friends for life and will never, ever forget one day I spent with them all… The volunteer accommodation was basic but really comfortable and the location was great. It gave us the chance to have peace and quiet but we had restaurants, supermarkets, bars and shops just a few minutes walk away.

The project I worked on was to help construct a brand new centre for the kids of the surrounding villages as the old one was severely damaged in recent storms. Throughout the time on the project we were supervised and directed by the Starfish team who were great at explaining our roles for each day. Everything was really well organised. We were transported to and from the site each day and not one of (there were 15 of us on the project) had a single complaint!

Thank you Starfish, you have made such a difference to the communities you support and also to the way I look at things. It was the most rewarding thing I have ever done and I will be back one day, for sure!”
