Some of our volunteers spent some time recently on the beautiful island of Samui taking part in a number of volunteering projects. This was a really valuable experience for everyone involved and they had lots of fun in the process.
The projects involved building a check dam high in the foothills of Koh Samui. These check dams help slow the flow of water in to the villages below, helping to reduce the risk of flooding.
As well as this our enthusiastic volunteers were able to visit one of the local schools in the area. Here they were able to spend time teaching the children some basic english lessons and playing some games with them. The kids were keen to learn and loved it.
Further to this the volunteers worked on painting one of the classrooms in the school to create a more vivid place to learn.
When our volunteers first reached Samui they were all treated to a great buffer including pizza!!
The following day the group were taken to the foothills in order to construct a check dam. Everyone was assigned a role and this helped to make the process more efficient and quick.
The group were involved with mixing cement and then passing full buckets along towards the dam.
Others in the group went looking for suitably sized rocks to help form the structure of the dam.
And here is the finished article! Our volunteers proudly left there marks by placing handprints on the dam.
The proceeding days were spent in one of the local Koh Samui schools.
Here’s some of our guys teaching the kids to play scrabble.
The children loved singing and dancing along to nursery rhymes.
Aswell as teaching, our fabulous volunteers spent time painting one of the classrooms in the school.
They stuck at it and managed to get the paintwork completed by the end of the day. We know they had lots of fun in the process. The work they did will touch the lives of many. Well done!!
