Our medical programmes take place in the Surin, a stunning location in one of the most rural areas in Thailand. However this means that not everyone here gets access to the healthcare and medical attention that they deserve. Here at Starfish we work with our gifted volunteers to help overcome some of these problems.
Our volunteers initially spend some time in one of the local hospitals where they are able to be hands on and interact with patients whilst learning so much. The staff at the hospital are extremely welcoming and are more than happy to help our volunteers learn how to give expert medical care.
Some of our most recent medical volunteers spent time at Surin hospital, where they were able to learn and apply some important skills including dressing wounds and applying injections. Later in the day they visited the local community to help raise the awareness of dengue fever and preventative measures. This was really important as this is a common disease affecting parts of Thailand. Our volunteers even helped to remove larvae from water.
As well as this medical volunteers get to visit local schools in the area to perform health check on the children. This can involve undertaking blood tests, checking blood pressure, checks for lice, eye tests, ear tests and physical examinations.
Dental health is also another priority for our volunteers. Recently our volunteers visited local schools and communities where they explained the importance of dental hygiene and how it could be achieved. Routine checks were also performed and effective treatment administered.
Another important aspect involves our volunteers learning and performing diagnosis on a variety of patients, all of the volunteers have told us what a fascinating and valuable experience this was.
