Reviews From Our Travellers

Aimee Balding – Childcare and Teaching
“Just wanted to let you know that I’ve had the best time and that the staff here are brilliant. You have a great team here and they all work extremely hard. All of them are willing to talk and discuss any queries you have. Aim and Santana have both cooked for us and been lovely people to work with! Tann has also been brilliant!

The one person who has really stood out has been Pompam. I honestly can’t speak highly enough of everyone but especially her. She has been brilliant! Not only has she been an excellent coordinator on my two projects but in the evenings she is always taking us out, organising tuk tuks showing us the sights. When i was travelling to Chiang Mai on my own she turned up at the bus station just to make sure i got on the right bus even though she was due to head home that evening. Its not just me either whenever guys wanted to get tickets or phone accommodation Pompam always stepped forward organised it and helped us sort it!”

Kate volunteered teaching English and building
“As I flew out of Bangkok and towards home, I flicked through a magazine and there staring me in the face was the perfect slogan.
Thailand: “The Land of Smiles”

I spent 3 months on a venture with Starfish that literally turned my life around. Instead of backpacking amongst ‘like minded people’ to well known areas, I lived within a Thai community and learned what it’s like to be content with very little, and appreciate things that we take for granted.

I was looking for new direction in my life, having spent 4 years as a dancer on a cruise ship, so I threw myself in the deep end and became a volunteer.

The Starfish team welcomed me with open arms. Always approachable, easily accessible and helpful; we soon became great friends.
My 1st few months, I worked with children at a local care centre and also helped with various projects in the community. These included painting a school, digging to provide ponds for families’ and teaching English to anyone and everyone! The children are so keen to learn. Their enthusiasm is infectious. Many a times I wondered just how manyThai children I could fit into my house in England!!!

In my third month, I moved location, and worked on a remote island with a team of experts to keep endangered species of turtles alive. While I was there we released a giant turtle back into the wild. It was incredible to have helped him on his way to being healthy and independent again.

During my free time, the Starfish team helped me to plan site seeing trips, which were affordable and rewarding! It was perfect to have a balance of both.

So…..If you want an experience that will absolutely blow your mind then look no further!!! I didn’t, and now I am planning my next trip back to the land of smiles to teach English full time!”

Duncan Anderson volunteered teaching English
“My name is Duncan Anderson and I completed an English Teaching venture during the months of October and November in 2005. During my visit I saw many fascinating things and met some very friendly and interesting people. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dan and June for giving me this opportunity and for making my stay so special.

Thai people are extremely friendly and generous. The laid-back and welcoming atmosphere was very pleasant and very easy to become a part of. The teachers at our host schools were generally very amicable and in some cases went very out of their way to make our stay in Thailand as special as possible. All schools provided food and refreshments and some went as far to take us out for lunches and dinners, on excursions at the weekends and provide us with presents, souvenirs and mementos when we left.
Everything (except wine!) was extremely cheap. This meant that we could dine on amazing food in local restaurants for next to nothing. Transport, the Internet, clothing and anything else you could wish for was all exceptionally reasonable.

The volunteer house was fantastic and exceeded my expectations. The shared kitchen and communal courtyard were ideal for socialising with other volunteers and this made living very comfortable.

June was our contact in Surin. She insured that we were comfortable both with our living arrangements and our school placements. She organised tuk tuks and other transportation for us and accompanied the volunteers during trips to the doctor and the hospital. It was very reassuring knowing June was there for us and I couldn’t have asked for more from her.

Dan met our group in Bangkok and made us all feel very welcome. We were put up in a nice hotel, went for dinner in a traditional restaurant and taken to see some of the capital’s nightlife. The following day we used a taxi, train and tuk tuk to take us to our accommodation in Surin. Without Dan there I would have found the whole experience very overwhelming. This integration into Thailand and its culture was very important and resulted in a successful start to the venture.

During my second month in Surin, pupils and teachers returned to school properly and I was given a timetable to work in two different schools. My hours and number of days was flexible and this allowed me to do additional ‘modern jive lessons’ on a Friday. This flexibility allowed me to commit a comfortable amount of hours to pupil contact time, planning time and a social life.
It was evident that the children’s vocabulary was, in most cases, good or very good and it was easy to add to this knowledge since repetition and written exercises are what the children were accustomed to. Getting the children to utilise this knowledge in sentences and spoken English was the real challenge.

I was very fortunate that my visit to Surin coincided with both the Elephant Festival and the Loy Kratong Festival. The elephant buffet element of the festival was probably the highlight of my trip and holds many special memories. These festivals definitely added to my venture. Since Surin is relatively detached from the Western tourist areas, the volunteers were made to feel special and in some resects revered by the local people – something we would not have felt if we were located in Bangkok or another major city.”

Katie Hodgkinson volunteered teaching English and on our School building Project

“I had just finished my A-levels and already knew that I was going to take a gap year before going to uni, and I wanted to do something worthwhile with my time off. I did some research on the internet and found the Starfish website- I made a phone call to Dan that day and by the end of the call I’d decided that I would volunteer for 2 months combining some teaching with the school development project.

Before I met up with Dan and the other volunteers, I travelled for a month with my boyfriend- I wanted to get a feel of Thailand before I started my venture. It is beautiful; clear blue sea, white sand, sparkling temples, gorgeous scenery. you can experience some amazing things. I would definitely recommend trying to see a bit of Thailand if you decide to volunteer with Starfish. It gives you the chance to compare two completely different ways that Thai people live. As soon as you get to Surin, it is very different to the more touristy areas of the country- almost a relief to escape the busy cities and islands!

The first month of my time in Surin was going to be spent on the school development project where we were to help create an outside teaching facility and garden areas for the children. When we arrived there on the first day the site we were to work on was a completely blank canvas- the earth was dry, clay, uneven- it was difficult to imagine we would be able to achieve what we eventually did! The first week was the hardest by far, digging massive holes, breaking up the clay-ridden earth, making a hill! But even so it was a lot of fun. All the volunteers joined in and worked as a team, even the kids mucked in a lot which was great.

Six weeks later our task was complete. After weeks of laying turf, staining wood, planting flowers and fruit trees, making stools and benches out of random bits of wood, we had achieved our goal. What was once an area of nothingness- is now a beautiful garden area, complete with a secret garden and a huge sala big enough to teach two classes at a time. All that hard work had paid off.

Unfortunately I didn’t have as much time teaching as I would have liked, but the time that I spent at Ban KhaeYai school was amazing. Everyone was so welcoming and the kids were very keen to listen to me and learn from me.

I had a fantastic time in Thailand- Dan and June not only helped us to settle in, they invited us into their lives, and for that I am very grateful. The other volunteers were lovely too, and I will stay in touch with everybody. I plan to go back to Surin again next year.
Thanks Starfish for making my Thai experience something special, I’ll never forget it. And I’ll be back!”

Debra volunteered on our Nursing Project and Peter volunteered as a teacher.
“We’ve just got back to the UK after one month based in Surin, Thailand with Starfish Ventures. I have been teaching English and my wife has been nursing and teaching. We can both honestly say that it was one of the great experiences of our lives, and if anybody is debating whether to embark on a Starfish project, then do it!!!

Dan and June, the Starfish organisers in Surin met us in Bangkok, and the fun started that evening! They were a fountain of knowledge and advice and we knew that they would sort out any problems. They helped us arrange trips on our days off, and we had great breaks to Kho Samet, Cambodia and Kho Chang (don’t miss that one!).II have never taught before, but the intensive weekend TEFL course set me up well for the job, and Starfish coordinated everything brilliantly both before and during the trip. I was a bit apprehensive on my first day teaching, but I needn’t have been. The Thai kids are wonderful – very keen to learn, very respectful, and a total joy! After a busy but hugely enjoyable English Camp at one school, we even taught the kids to play rounders and cricket! My only regret was that we were only there for one month – I could happily have stayed for many more.

My wife, was mainly based at rural clinics helping the nurse practitioner, and loved sharing knowledge of routines and practices. All the clinic staff were really welcoming, and patients seemed to take to a ‘farang’ treating them! She also taught one day a week, and came on the three day English Camp, enjoying the teaching nearly as much as the nursing, much to her surprise! I had great difficulty stopping her from bringing half the kids back with us.

Without meaning to sound like an advert for Starfish Ventures, they really helped make the adventure such a success, and we are now trying to persuade all our friends to get off their backsides and be volunteers! To be a valued member of the community, if only for a short time, is so much better than being just a tourist.”

Baylee O’Sullivan was on our elephant and childcare projects.

I volunteered with Starfish for a month last year, it was a really rewarding experience, one that I would do again in a heart beat.

I did 2 weeks working in a childcare and 2 weeks working with elephants at the elephant village.

Both projects were great and rewarding in different ways.

The children at the childcare were great and it was awesome been able to part of their lives. A day at the childcare consisted of looking and playing with the kids, helping to teach english and day to day class activities. We also help with lunch time meals etc. I miss the kids alot and would love to go back.

The elephant village was great and our co-ordinator Worn was amazing. A day in the village consisted of helping the local village with their sugar cane fields..planting, cutting, plowing etc. then we would look after the elephant, riding, bathing, washing, feeding etc. i loved every minute of my time there.

The staff at starfish are extremely nice and helpful..they become your friends and will do everything to make sure your stay with them is amazing. They really do go the extra mile for you!! I miss them all!

I recommend Starfish for anyone wanting to give back and volunteer. It is a great way to travel and do something different!

Rob Smith – 4 weeks Elephant Adventure
“Hope you’re well. Just emailing to give you some feedback on my time with Starfish ventures in Surin. I’d like to start by saying that My time with in Surin was one of the Highlights of my entire 4 month trip of south east Asia. The staff were amazing, I can truly say I’ve made some great friends for life with many of the members. They all did everything they could to help in anyway possible, in work hours and out, and would go out of there way to make sure you had everything you needed. Even to the extent of helping us organise travel arrangements after the volunteering had finished. Deuan especially helped us out a lot. She invited us into her home to stay with her, as we found it hard to leave Surin and the people we had met. Worn also let me stay with him in his village, helping him farm on his time off. Both are exceptional people who couldn’t do enough for us!! That’s not taking anything away from the rest of the staff, but these two really stood out to me and I really do believe they are major assets to you company. I really cant say enough good things about Starfish, and would recommend you highly to anyone thinking of doing anything similar in the future. I’m even thinking of coming Back next year or the year after to carry on volunteering. Thank you also for all your help organising our trip, it really took a weight off our minds knowing that there was someone we could talk to with advice, and the fact you knew all the places we wanted to visit helped also. It would be nice if the staff got to hear this feedback as sometimes I think the volunteers find it all to easy to pick fault in peoples work, and they only hear the negative. When in truth I cant find anything bad to say about any of them.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, and hope to see you in a year or two!!”

Natalie Berkhout – Elephant Adventure

“One thing to say about the elephant project -> it was Awesome!! I loved it! Staying in the village was really great and i would not want it any other way. Khun Lee made us feel so at home there! Steve, i need to express to you how much Thawon added to our experience. I do believe i speak for everyone on the project when i say that he was so enthusiastic and full of energy and humour and became such a special part of our time there. He was absolutely fantastic, and our experience would not have been the same without him.
Steve, thank you again for everything! You have been so helpful and personal, and it is for this reason that we decided to go with Starfish!”

Ruth Tofler and her 9 year old son, Alex – Elephant Adventure
“I’ve wanted to be in touch for a while to say that our time
with Starfish was AMAZING! Both for Alexander and me in so many ways. I’ve
done a lot of traveling over the years, but this was honestly the best trip
of my life, for many many reasons. I’ve been singing Starfish’ praises and
passed your name on to several friends, so you never know. One has already
signed up for your mail list.

Also we are hoping to come back again next year some time after Paylin (Mr
Lee’s elephant) has her baby, Alexander has been pining for Paylin, and for
Poy (they became very sweet close friends despite the age difference!), and
in general for all our new friends. Poy was amazing, not just with Alexander
but with all of us. In fact, all the staff are really very special and
caring – we all felt as if we were getting personal attention, that goes for
everyone in our group.

Oh, and last but not least – thanks for your incredible help when I contacted you about two
minutes before we arrived in Thailand! Much appreciated and you really made
it happen for us.”

Sisters Nikki and Sarah Welsby, after two weeks of community work in Surin and the elephant village.

“Starfish is a fantastic organisation and we would recommend their ventures to anyone. The placements are well organised and the people are both helpful and knowledgeable. Many other volunteer organisations only offer 3 or 6 month placements, which don’t cater for people who have full-time jobs. We volunteered for 2 weeks with Starfish and had a brilliant time – we’d definitely go again!”

Nat was on the elephant adventure project.

I was in Thailand for 3 months volunteering on the elephant and the turtle project and loved every minute! You give a lot to the communities and people you work with, but you receive so much in return! It was one of the most memorable experiences of my life, specifically the elephant project! Feeding the ellies, getting to the know the character of the ellies and the mahouts, planting food for them, masheteeing trees for them, walking them to the river to “bath” and play, having fun with the local kids, the food, the weather, the peace, the fun, the whole experience was awesome!! 🙂

Bradley McCormack volunteered on our elephant adventure.

Volunteering with starfish volunteers in Thailand was an incredible experience! I worked on the elephant project for two weeks and had the time of my life. The staff were fantastic and went Beyond their job requirements to ensure our stay was safe, including organizing our weekend activities. The village we stayed in was welcoming and gave us a great insight into rural thailand life. Starfish staff were easily contactable both before and during our trip which made the experience run smoothly and safely. I recommend volunteering with starfish, and further encourage people to work on the elephant project as it is an incredible experience, being up and close with elephants every day.Volunteering with starfish volunteers in Thailand was an incredible experience! Sian Franklin
After recently returning from the Starfish Medical Project in Surin….well what can I say, words can not express the gratitude and thanks I give this company, they are brilliant!! From booking the project (which was great value for money compared to other projects, yet definitely no poorer quality) everything was a smooth process and Steve answered any questions we had promptly and happily. Upon meeting the team in Bangkok the accommodation was greatly placed on Khao San Road and we had a fab first couple of days with the Starfish staff here. Upon transfer to Surin we were shown to our house which although basic had everything we needed and was a great size! the medical project itself was a great experience, where the staff are happy to meet your requirements of what you want to learn. We had Nam as our starfish coordinator and she was amazing, both whilst on the medical project and also in helping us organise further trips to complete in our spare time. All of the Starfish staff were amazing and helpful in every way, it really did help us settle into our surroundings and when leaving it definately felt as though we had become one big family. Many volunteer abroad companys get a lot of stick for being money robbing and not helping the community, starfish could not be further from this, they make a great contribution to the local community and presented donations from the starfish money pot to many different organisations we were involved with whilst we were there. If anyone is debating whether to volunteer abroad in Thailand, then just do it! you learn so much, meet lots of new people, make a difference and starfish are the number one company to do this with. Thankyou to all of the starfish staff and volunteers involved in our trip. Sian Franklin and the other medical volunteers from The University of Cumbria, May 11th – June 1st 2012

Undoubtedly had the best time of my life in Thailand, I wish I could do it all over again! Salita Nam was a fantastic coordinator!! Thank you Starfish!!

Chester University Nursing Students volunteered on our nursing project.

I was part of a group of 7 student nurses from England volunteering in Surin hospital in Thailand. We all thouroughly enjoyed our experience with starfish and can not fault them at all. From the moment we landed in Bangkok airport a member of their team has been with us to answer any queries we may have, nothing is too much of a problem for them. Arranging the trip was simple as the staff in the office in Bangkok are extremely efficient. The staff in Surin province, where the hospital and other volunteering projects are based, are very welcoming and you instantly feel at home.

We will defintely be returning to Thailand amazing place!

Kesh volunteered on our medical project in 2012.

I’ve never done volunteering before, and mid backpacking round the world, stumbled upon starfish – best decision I ever made. The projects are really useful to the community, the staff are amazing, supportive, and really, I felt like I was a Thai local – an experience you don’t get from just backpacking your way through. Seeing the Thai people’s response to your assistance, and even in the local community where you’re living, was great, you get to have heaps of fun, whilst ensuring the serious business of your project gets done – I did medical volunteering, working in a small local clinic, who provided well-being and regular check ups for the surrounding farming community, and met some amazing individuals. As for living like a Thai person – even managed to attend a Thai wedding! The guys at Starfish are awesome, and look after you well – still in contact with them, and hope to meet them again someday….with Starfish you will have an awesome experience, guaranteed!

Graham worked on a schools development project. 2012.

“I recently spent 6 weeks working with Starfish on their School Development project. I had always wanted to help with a construction project in a developing country and this seemed to be the perfect fit for me. From the first time I contacted Starfish I was really impressed with their level of customer service, guidance, knowledge of Thailand, the projects and the reasons why they operate. They seemed to be very professional but I was mostly impressed by their insistence of meeting the expectations of the volunteers requirements before the financial aspect – as so many other ‘volunteer’ organisations fail to do!

From the moment I arrived in Bangkok, to sadly saying goodbye to the Starfish team and Surin, I felt safe, secure and well cared for by everybody involved. I made a huge number of friends for life and will never, ever forget one day I spent with them all. Nam, Worn, Deuan and all of the Surin staff did everything they could to make our lives easier, very often going above and beyond the call of duty. The volunteer accommodation was basic but really comfortable and the location was great. It gave us the chance to have peace and quiet but we had restaurants, supermarkets, bars and shops just a few minutes walk away.

The project I worked on was to help construct a brand new centre for the kids of the surrounding villages as the old one was severely damaged in recent storms. Throughout the time on the project we were supervised and directed by the Starfish team who were great at explaining our roles for each day. Everything was really well organised. We were transported to and from the site each day and not one of (there were 15 of us on the project) had a single complaint!

Thank you Starfish, you have made such a difference to the communities you support and also to the way I look at things. It was the most rewarding thing I have ever done and I will be back one day, for sure!”

KPMG Group volunteered in Sangkhlaburi on a development project.

“We volunteered with Starfish volunteers in Sangkhlaburi, North Thailand this Sep 2011. As Sangkhlaburi isn’t the typical tourist area, we were really thankful for the help of the Starfish Volunteers. For a reasonable price, they gave us a fuss-free volunteer vacation. Everything was settled for us, from the picking us up from the Bangkok airport, to the booking of accommodation. We even had a friendly volunteer guide with us throughout the weeklong trip.

Unlike many volunteer organisations out there that operate like a profit-making business, the guides here serve with their hearts. Steve William, one of the volunteers was also very responsive over emails and never pressurised us into taking on a package with them. He was very patient in responding to our queries and even responded to their needs.

Thanks to them, we now have fond memories of a place called Sangkhlaburi. We will definitely contact them soon for future volunteering collaborations. We love you guys!”
