Volunteer abroad on our medical placement
Volunteering overseas on our medical and healthcare project is a great way to gain valuable work experience whilst offering support to some of the poorest and neediest people in a small Thai community. Whether you are looking for some practical experience to help you get on to a university course, a healthcare professional who wants to use your skills for those less fortunate, or you just want to come and help out in any way you can, you will have a role to play at our medical project. Each placement is tailored to you so that, where possible, your work will depend on your experience and your interests.
Our medical volunteering abroad program is especially ideal for healthcare students and professionals as it will give you a first-hand look at the healthcare sector in a rural Thai community. This is a hands-on experience with support from our team who will arrange day-to-day activities and assist with your questions.
As a healthcare volunteer in Thailand you will get to see the importance of healthcare in these rural areas and get a greater understanding of the standards of medical practice in Thailand. Hospitals and clinics in the rural parts of Thailand are very often poorly resourced and you may encounter patients who have advanced illnesses and conditions that are rarely seen in the western world. By working in these communities you will have the opportunity not only help to diagnose and treat illnesses, but also help to educate people so that they can prevent harmful behaviours which may negatively impact their health.
PRE-UNIVERSITY AND GENERAL VOLUNTEERS
You will be involved in the day-to-day running of the local clinics, observing and assisting doctors and nurses. Your work will be varied and interesting so that you will be constantly learning and discovering new things. Some days you may be visiting patients in their homes whilst others you may be doing the rounds in a clinic or hospital among other things.
MEDICAL STUDENT & PROFESSIONAL VOLUNTEER PLACEMENTS
As a medical or healthcare student you will likely be given increased responsibility and have a much more hands-on approach to your placement. You may also be given a more active role in patient care. Our medical volunteering abroad project gives you an interesting opportunity to experience healthcare services in rural Thailand and compare them to healthcare services you have already experienced in your home country.
ELECTIVE STUDENTS VOLUNTEER PLACEMENTS
Our medical volunteering abroad program also provides an excellent framework for medical internships or elective placements and may offer unique opportunities to learn new skills and knowledge from other volunteers, nurses and doctors. You can then use this knowledge throughout your medical career so that you can contribute more to your patients care.
As an elective healthcare volunteer you and your group will be given supervision while you collaborate and work with the local doctors and nurses. You may also have the opportunity to take part in an outreach program and visit patients in their homes.
Check out the tour itinerary below to get an even better understanding of this project and your time in Surin.
DAY 1 – ARRIVAL IN BANGKOK
You will arrive into Bangkok on the start date for your tour and one of our friendly guides will be there to pick you up. From the airport you will be whisked away to your guesthouse on the bustling backpacker haven of Khao San road. Take some time to adjust to the changes around you such as the hot weather, the culture and the many delicious smells coming from the street food stalls. Later that evening you will meet up with the rest of the your group to get to know each other more on your first night on Khao San road.
DAY 2 – BANGKOK TOUR
The next day you will join your guide on an amazing tour of Bangkok. You will get to explore some of the city’s best landmarks such as the temple of the reclining Buddha, the Temple of Dawn, the Grand Palace and more.
DAY 3 – TRANSFER TO SURIN, WELCOME MEETING AND ORIENTATION
Take a rustic looking train to Surin through Thailand’s largest national park, Khao Yai. The train ride itself is pretty incredible as Thailand’s trains are a different style to those in Western countries and you may feel like you have traveled back in time. Bring your camera for the trip as you will no doubt see plenty of things worth photographing.
Surin is often referred to as ‘the heart of Thailand’ where you will find warm smiles and friendly faces to greet you.
When you arrive in Surin you will be given chance to settle into your shared volunteer house with the other people in your group. The accommodation is clean but basic and may be a bit of a difference from what you are used to, but this is all part of the Thailand experience. Many of our volunteers have said that living in shared accommodation has actually made it much easier to not only make friends with the other volunteers in their group but that it actually helped them to feel more like a family.
Later that day you will be given an orientation that will outline what you will be doing during your volunteering and also give you some interesting information about Surin and Thai culture.
DAY 4-6 – VOLUNTEER WORK AND MEDICAL FACILITY VISIT
Your volunteering begins and you will be helping out in a variety of ways depending on your skills and the needs of the community. The places where you will carry out your work will vary and you could be attending to individuals in their homes or visiting local clinics and hospitals. Your work as a medical volunteer abroad will also vary on a daily basis which helps to keep your volunteer work fun, interesting and aligned with the needs of the community.
During the medical volunteer project you will have support from one of our team members who will arrange day-to-day activities, help translate for you and assist you with your questions.
DAY 7 – FREE TIME IN SURIN OR ONWARD TRAVEL
If you are joining us for a one week project then your volunteer work will be completed and your time in Surin will come to an end. Hopefully you will have lot’s of photos and some incredible and insightful experiences to look back on.
If you are staying with us for any project longer than one week then you will have the weekends as free time to relax or explore. You could even take a short break to neighbouring Cambodia on the weekend before heading back to Surin to continue your volunteering.
Please note that return travel to Bangkok is not included but you can ask your guide to help you arrange it.
DAY 9 (2 WEEKS OR MORE) – CONTINUE VOLUNTEERING
During the weekdays you will continue volunteering in Surin. The work will be varied so it’s unlikely that two weeks will ever be exactly alike which means there is always something new to learn and discover. You will have weekends free to hang out with your new friends, go exploring or whatever else you would like to do – the choice is yours.

“We’ve been volunteering with Starfish for 4 weeks as second year nursing students… We’ve had an amazing time volunteering with Starfish and would like to thank all the Starfish staff.”
Francesca & Emily
“I had a thoroughly good time and a really good experience learning loads of new things.”
“I was part of a group of 7 student nurses from England volunteering in Surin hospital in Thailand. We all thouroughly enjoyed our experience with starfish and can not fault them at all. From the moment we landed in Bangkok airport a member of their team has been with us to answer any queries we may have, nothing is too much of a problem for them.
Arranging the trip was simple as the staff in the office in Bangkok are extremely efficient.
The staff in Surin province, were the hospital and other volunteering projects are based, are very welcoming and you instantly feel at home.
We will definitely be returning to Thailand amazing place!”
“I volunteered as a physiotherapist at Prasat Hospital with Starfish. I have just recently qualified and found the whole experience to be amazing.”
“I’ve never done volunteering before, and mid backpacking round the world, stumbled upon starfish – best decision I ever made. The projects are really useful to the community, the staff are amazing, supportive, and really, I felt like I was a Thai local – an experience you don’t get from just backpacking your way through. Seeing the Thai people’s response to your assistance, and even in the local community where you’re living, was great, you get to have heaps of fun, whilst ensuring the serious business of your project gets done – I did medical volunteering, working in a small local clinic, who provided well-being and regular check ups for the surrounding farming community, and met some amazing individuals. As for living like a Thai person – even managed to attend a Thai wedding! The guys at starfish are awesome, and look after you well – still in contact with them, and hope to meet them again someday….with starfish you will have an awesome experience, guaranteed!”
